The end is near for Wolverine.
Today marks the first installment of the four-part Death of Wolverine comic book series from Marvel, in which the seemingly-immortal mutant with the indestructible skeleton will finally meet his end. After 40 years of failing to play nice with others, Logan’s healing powers have finally worn off and he must now face the music for decades of making enemies across the world.
While many high-profile comic book deaths haven’t lasted long (think: Captain America, the Human Torch, or Spider-Man), Marvel Editor-in-Chief Charles Soule says that this one “is an event that’s designed to stick.” It’s easy to say that now, but what happens when the world needs a rough-around-the-edges anti-hero to save the day? What then?
