One of the great perils of being a writer is that it’s very easy to end up totally broke and living in pretty awful circumstances. However, if you’re willing to move to Detroit, you can get a house…for free.
That’s right. Free.
A new non-profit called Write a House is buying dilapidated properties across Detroit, fixing them up, and straight up giving them to writers willing to move there. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds to get a house, of course; you have to meet the requirements for being a low-income/working writer, apply, and have your application chosen by a panel of judges.
Once you get the house, you’re locked into a low-cost 24 month lease. If you decide to stay beyond that, they hand you the deed to the house. Not a bad deal.
