Wired got their hands on some files on Steve Jobs from the Department of Defense dating back to the late 1980s. As part of a background check at the time for a top-secret security clearance, the Apple founder was forced to be completely transparent regarding past criminal activities and drug use. So, he got to tellin' the Feds about acid.
"I used LSD from approximately 1972 to 1974,” he wrote in the application. “Throughout that period of time I used the LSD approximately ten to fifteen times. I would ingest the LSD on a sugar cube or in a hard form of gelatin. I would usually take the LSD when I was by myself. I have no words to explain the effect the LSD had on me, although, I can say it was a positive life changing experience for me and I am glad I went through that experience."
He also mentioned smoking hash and weed—and buying the latter for only $10 to $20 an ounce back then!—as well as an arrest for an unpaid speeding ticket in 1975.
He got the clearance.
