Following the huge success of the Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never, Paramount Pictures has announced that its director, Jon Chu, will handle the sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. Chu, who also directed the last two Step Up films, admits to Box Office Magazine that he's a stan for all things Hasbro and wants his take on the action-adventure to be "gritty."
"I really want to do it in 3-D," he says. "But the decision hasn't been made yet. It's good to have a big discussion about that...but there are other factors that are built into it."
Most critics blasted the Stephen Sommers-helmed first flick, which starred Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans, and Chu is no different. "There's a grittiness to Joe...and it was always that grittiness that I feel like if Joe had it in there [the first movie], it would be a totally different movie and have a totally different feel. I've never felt like I've had a movie of Joe where I can taste my childhood right there."
Paramount Pictures has circled August 10, 2012 as the sequel's release date.
