KJ Apa is stepping into one of Hollywood’s most iconic legacies.
According to Variety, the Riverdale star has been cast as Jimmy Stewart in Jimmy, which traces the actor’s life from classic Hollywood stardom to wartime service—and back again, just in time for the Christmas-era legacy of It’s a Wonderful Life.
Released by Burns & Co. Entertainment, the first look at the film presents Apa as Stewart caught between two worlds. Promotional imagery depicts him in formal Hollywood attire, clutching an Army Air Corps cap, with World War II bombers overhead and Klieg lights illuminating him.
The film follows Stewart after his Academy Award win for The Philadelphia Story, when he made the unexpected decision to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Stewart flew 20 combat missions over Europe, eventually rising to the rank of colonel.
According to the film’s synopsis, his return home was marked by emotional exhaustion and disillusionment—experiences that shaped his eventual performance as George Bailey in the 1946 Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life.
Apa addressed the weight of portraying the screen legend in a statement, calling Stewart “an American hero.”
He added, “He was among a certain breed of men who understood the true meaning of sacrifice by fighting for our freedom… His story is one of strength and purpose, love and honor, fame and war.”
The cast surrounding Apa also reflects Hollywood history. Jason Alexander plays studio executive Louis B. Mayer, Christopher McDonald appears as Lionel Barrymore, and Max Casella portrays director Frank Capra. Other cast members include Kara Killmer, Neal McDonough, Sarah Drew, Rob Riggle, and Jen Lilley. Variety’s Marc Malkin also makes a cameo as bandleader Glenn Miller.
A notable connection to It’s a Wonderful Life comes through Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu Bailey as a child. Grimes appears in Jimmy, revisiting the world tied to one of cinema’s most enduring Christmas films. “It’s truly an honor to return to the screen and take part in a film that pays tribute to one of the most enduring stories in cinematic history,” she said.
Directed by Aaron Burns and written by Justin Strawhand, Jimmy is slated for release on November 6, 2026.
