Even universally beloveds actors like Oscar Isaac pick up a few dud roles here and there. Fortunately Isaac is self aware enough to admit that X-Men: Apocalypsewas his.
In a video interview with GQ, Isaac runs through a list of his career highlights, including Ex Machina,A Most Violent Year, and of course his work in the Star Wars franchise. But when it comes to his role as Apocalypse, Isaac admits “that was excruciating.”
“Apocalypse, that was excruciating. I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening," he said. "That I was going to be encased in glue, latex, and a 40-pound suit—that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times. I couldn’t move my head, ever.”
The actor took on the role as X-Men’s villain to hang out with an all-star cast of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and more. But inside his confining, hot plastic suit, Isaac could barely even see his co-stars let alone talk with them.
“I couldn’t move my head,” Isaac said. “And I had to sit on a specially designed saddle, because that’s the only thing I could really sit on, and I would be rolled into a cooling tent in-between takes. And so I just wouldn’t ever talk to anybody, and I was just gonna be sitting and I couldn’t really move, and like, sweating inside the mask and the helmet. And then getting it off was the worst part, because they just had to kind of scrape it off for hours and hours. So, that was X-Men: Apocalypse.”
