Netflix U.K., for some reason, decided to change the ending of The Notebookand everyone is up in arms.Â
Jezebel reports the streaming giant altered the heart-wrenching conclusion, where originally—spoiler alert—protagonists Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) have grown old together. Allie suffers from severe dementia and lives in a retirement home; she doesn’t remember the deep love she had for Noah, and he makes it his life’s mission to remind her. Eventually, day after day, she remembers, though quickly forgets, until the two pass away in bed together, holding hands.
Netflix U.K.'s version cut and replaced the ending with a scene of a flock of birds flying over a lake—and fans are upset.
Â
Netflix told TMZ it didn't alter the ending, stating, "An alternate version exists and was supplied to us—we are getting to the bottom of it asap. Apparently, some films have more than one ending?!"
The Notebook will hit American Netflix in March; we'll have to see if they repeat the same grave mistake.
In other tragic news, Netflix has canceledThe Punisher and Jessica Jones, which were the only remaining series from Marvel left on Netflix. This move signals the end of Marvel and Netflix’s relationship, which began in 2013 with the news of four series and the Defenders limited series. The Punisher was a bonus sixth show that got added after the fact.
