Chris Rock is in hot water for letting two other A-list comedians get away with saying the n-word in an old conversation. In the clip from 2011, both Louis C.K. and Ricky Gervais drop the slur with a hard "r." C.K. and Rock have had a long relationship together, with C.K. writing for The Chris Rock Show and Pootie Tang.
"He’s the blackest white guy I fucking know,” Rock said of C.K. in the bit from the show Talking Funny.
“In all the negative things we think about black people, this fucker—,” he said before being interrupted by C.K.
“You’re saying I’m a n****r?” C.K. asked, which led to two very different reactions from Gervais and Jerry Seinfeld, who was also on the stage. While Jerry did his best to melt into the floor, C.K. doubled down.
“We say n****r on stage,” C.K. said, indicating Rock and himself. “You guys don’t.”
Gervais takes the bait, relishing the opportunity to transgress.
“Who says ‘n****r?’ We don’t,” the British comic asks.
Twitter was more than a little upset that Rock didn't check C.K. and Gervais.
When you’re watching something disappointing, then for the first time in your whole life, find yourself wanting to give props to Jerry Seinfeld. pic.twitter.com/jHkLYc4Qat
Folks also pointed out that the only person who felt like the conversation went off the rails was Seinfeld.
