Idris Elba is obviously an amazing actor and can deliver some powerhouse performances. But he can also just be a total badass, and it’s still pretty cool to see him just make a straight-up action movie every now and them. That’s what he’s doing in Bastille Day.
This French-set thriller was reportedly delayed because of the Paris terror attacks, and to be honest, the setting of the explosions and stuff might make it a bit uncomfortable for some. But if you can get past that, it looks like highly enjoyable, dumb fun. After a bomb goes on in the French capital, Idris plays a CIA agent on the trail of an American pickpocket (Game Of Thrones’Richard Madden) who dropped off the bag with the explosives. Only the pickpocket claims he didn’t know what was in the bag when he lifted it. Do you think there might be a larger conspiracy going on? (Yes, well done, you appear to have seen movies before). It doesn’t look like high art, but Elba kicking down doors and punching out dudes is always worth watching.
