David Letterman Jokes: "Treat a Lady Like a Whore and a Whore Like a Lady"

Lucky for him it wasn't on camera.

David Letterman has always had an impressive DGAF attitude, and he can afford to go even further with the end of his Late Show career in sight. However, he may have gone a little too far while trying to warm up the audience before Monday night's show.

Audience members told Page Six that Letterman opened up with a shocking sexist joke—the Late Show host was taking questions from his fans, and a college staffer asked for his advice to 2015 graduates. "Treat a lady like a whore and a whore like a lady," Letterman responded.

Reactions from the crowd ranged from surprised ("I turned to my wife and was, like, 'What?') to outraged ("We already live in a culture that objectifies women, it’s not right to make a joke like that.")

Apparently the line is from a 1930s screenwriter named Wilson Mizner, which tells you all you need to know about its place today. A Letterman spokesperson said, "I can’t confirm the accuracy of that," but a source close to show indicated a lack of remorse, saying, "It got a big laugh."
