Jon Hamm Says He's Passed Up Several Superhero Roles

And he's glad he did it.

Can you imagine Jon Hamm as a superhero? Several studio executives have, but it just doesn't seem right to us. Regardless of what the Emmys have said (or haven't said), Hamm has been remarkable in his exploration of Don Draper, and playing a superhero would cheapen his talents. We're glad Hamm has passed up those roles, and the man himself says he is too.

Hamm told Radio Times his decision has more to do with the commitment required for comic book roles more than anything else.

"The deals that they make you do are so Draconian. And, of course, you are signed on for not only the movie … but at least two more that you haven't read, and you have no idea what they are going to be and all the crossover ones you are going to have to do. For me to sign on now to do a superhero movie would mean I would be working until I am 50 as that particular superhero. It's a lot of work at one thing, which is not necessarily the reason I got into the business, which is to do many things. If you want to spend all day pressing the same key, that … seems an odd choice."

Though he's glad he hasn't put on tights, Hamm said it's contributed to him feeling "old and irrelevant in the current media landscape." He added, "It doesn't compute to the generation that most of Hollywood cares about if your last name's not Hemsworth or you are not in One Direction or you don't wear a cape and tights for a living, you literally have a hard time making an impression."

Well Jon, you've made a quite an impression with us. We can't wait to see how Mad Men ends, and we can't wait to see what you do next. Especially since superpowers are out of question.
