Officials in Seattle say a man burned his house down last night while trying to kill a spider in possibly the dumbest fashion imaginable.

According to KOMO, the Seattle Fire Department was summoned to the man's West Seattle home around 8:30 p.m. yesterday. There, the man explained that he encountered a spider in his laundry room and attempted to end its life using a lighter and can of spray paint. Unfortunately for him, the wall caught on fire, forcing him to flee when he was unable to put it out.

Though the fire department was eventually able to control the blaze, it left significant damage to his home. The man and woman that he lived with will be temporarily displaced as an estimated $40,000 worth of damage was done to the home, which they were renting.

Did the spider survive? No one knows and, honestly, it doesn't matter.
