Comedian John Mulaney's new sitcom Mulaney is the reason we're losing Nasim Pedrad on Saturday Night Live, so it damn well better be good.
Mulaney, a former SNL writer, revealed his strategy for making sure of that at the Television Critics Association press tour today: plagiarize the greatest sitcom of all time.
"I just watched Seinfeld and copied it," Mulaney joked. "They run it all the time. It was easy."
But was it totally a joke? Check out the show's trailer:
1.
There will never, NEVER, be another show about nothing (OK, maybe Curb Your Enthusiasm), but lets run down the similarities between this trailer and Seinfeld.
-He's a thin, neat, white guy doing a stand-up intro.
-The title of the show is his IRL last name.
-He's got two tight friends, a guy and a woman, who hang in the kitchen at his apartment. (Pedrad and Seaton Smith).
-There's a wacky neighbor type of guy who stands in the doorway.
-The producer and director of Mulaney is actually the same dude who produced and directed Seinfeld.
And the differences from Seinfeld?
-The trailer is not that funny.
That does not mean we won't give this show a chance -- Mulaney is the guy who created Stefon with Bill Hader -- that alone earns you a chance. We'll just have to wait and see how it goes when the show premieres this October.
