On Thursday night, 14 members of a fraternity at a Wilmington, Ohio college were charged for their participation in an incident that left one student without one of his testicles last fall.
The Wilmington College chapter of Gamma Phi Gamma implemented a hazing ritual that involved pledges participating in a series of humiliating acts deep in the bowels of the "Gobbler House," which just sounds horrible:
According to charging documents, the blindfolded prospective members had to stuff their mouths with limburger cheese while rubbing Icy Hot on their bodies—including their groins. They were then ordered to "fuck a sheep" (which was actually a ball of stuffing).
This isn't the worst of it. The pledges were then pummeled with "knotted-up towels" last October, and Tyler Lawrence was struck in the crotch with such force that he immediately crumbled to the ground. It was only after the ritual that Lawrence was hospitalized, and doctors found bruises and cuts on his body, in addition to removing his testicle.
In an interview with WLWT, Lawrence insisted that the incident that left him without a testicle was a "freak accident," as opposed to hazing. "It definitely wasn't meant to happen, not hazing whatsoever." The law sees it a different way, as over a dozen Gamma Phi Gamma members were charged with hazing and face a maximum of 30 days in jail.
The fraternity has been suspended since Lawrence's injury, giving them plenty of time to rethink their "practices."
