According to CNN, Russell Johnson, the actor who played The Professor on Gilligan’s Island, died today at the age of 89. Up until his death, Johnson lived in his home in Washington with his wife Connie. Both his wife and daughter were with him when he passed at his home earlier today. Johnson is also survived by a stepson and grandson.

Johnson’s agent, Mike Eisenstadt, confirmed the news today and stated that his death was unexpected. Johnson was still active and productive, even at 89. The article even mentions that Johnson spent part of the holidays signing autographs. Eisenstadt referred to Johnson as "just a positive and nice guy.”

Though he played a range of different characters over the years, Johnson will always be best known for his work as Professor Roy Hinkley from Gilligan’s Island. He taught us all that simple items like coconuts and bamboo can be turned into intricate inventions with the help of just a little TV magic. Unfortunately, all of his attempts to get the marooned party off that island were thwarted by the simple-minded Gilligan, played by Bob Denver. This was one of the show's running gags, which helped cement it as a TV classic.

With Johnson’s death, the only two surviving members of the show’s cast are Dawn Wells (Mary-Ann) and Tina Louise (Ginger Grant).
