Determined to save people cash and prevent headaches, NerdWallet embarked on a mission to find the best metropolitan areas for renters. After considering the size of the rental market and how affordable an area is for the average person, they ranked the ten best cities and areas in the U.S. for renters. The best place? Fargo, N.D.
Based on the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment, median monthly income and percentage of renter households, Fargo came out on top. Completing the top 10 are Grand Forks, N.D., Ames, Iowa, Corvallis, Ore., the D.C. area, Virginia's Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford area, Columbia, Mo., Lincoln, Neb. and Bloomington-Normal, Ill.
With average monthly rent below $500, Fargo is a cost-efficient location. Just stay away from all wood chippers.
