23. KATE MARA AS ANNIE CANTRELL IN WE ARE MARSHALL (2006)

We don’t know what’s sadder: the plane crash that killed 37 Marshall University football players in 1970, or the fact that such an inspirational story ended up being told through a pair of uninteresting Matthew’s, McConaughey and Fox.

OK, so obviously the former is the bigger tragedy, yet it’s tough not to think about how good of a sports movie We Are Marshall could’ve been with two different leads. Instead of motivating audiences, McConaughey always seems like he’s about to hang ten, while Lost star Fox’s range stretches from bland to pretty dull.

At least there’s Kate Mara, though, the beautiful and perennially underused redhead who plays the film’s main cheerleader. It’s a bit part, but every bit helps when you’ve got Surfer, Dude on board.
