David Sirota Reads from his Book on the '80s "Back to Our Future" Thursday (3/24) in Chicago

Your borrowed '80s nostalgia may be wrong—here's why.

None

There's a great line in LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" where James Murphy sings (er, talks, really), "I'm losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostaligia for the unremembered '80s." It's that last bit—unremembered '80s—that writer David Sirota wants to talk about.

Sirota's book, Back to Our Future: How the 1980s Explain the World We Live in Now looks past the superficial American Apparel-colored memories of the '80s that have invaded the popular imagination to the rotten core: the narcissism, militarism, and cold-blooded capitalism that paved the way for many of the problems we experience today.

Sirota will discuss his book Thursday in the Cardinal Room of the UIC Student Center East Building. To attend, please RSVP to Paris TerKeurst at (773) 772-0100, ext. 246, or by e-mailing paris@inthesetimes.com.
