Before you check out District 9 this weekend, get a primer in alien oppression with the short film that started it all. In 2005, Neill Blomkamp directed Alive In Joburg, a six-minute sci-fi banger about aliens landing in 1990 South Africa. Peter Jackson took notice, and he reportedly recruited the visual effects wiz to direct a big screen adaptation of Halo (and from the looks of the Joburg combat scenes, you can see why). When the video game project went south, they decided to work on a feature-length film that expanded on the idea of the original short instead. Halo can wait!
