Sometimes, the best covers are the ones that don’t try too hard to be drastically different from the original. Artists often get so concerned with putting their own spin on a song that they lose sight of what made the song so appealing in the first place. Mainland’s “West Coast” cover doesn’t stray far from Coconut Records’ original. It feels a little more filled out thanks in part to an electric guitar instead of an acoustic one, but the song is perfectly in tact, and it sounds as good as it did when it was released back in 2007.
