At its core, “Cat Gotcha Tongue?!?” is a slice of R&B-influenced indie pop that works because of its simplicity. In the first 30 seconds of the song, there are some scattered signs that things aren’t going to stay so simple, though. It swells into a thumping, off-kilter beat with a disjointed symphony of electronic chirps, tings, gasps, and howls that nudge this track into the deep end and make the airy crooning all the more interesting. As left-field as it gets, the heavy-handed drums and simple melody hold it all together, making for a promising debut single. Fans of Jai Paul should be pleased.
