Daily Discovery is a feature that highlights a new or recently discovered artist who we’re excited about. See the rest of our Daily Discoveries here.

BOYBOY is another artist in the increasingly steady flow of artists who choose to remain anonymous. What we know is that BOYBOY’s first two singles are excellent. “Boy” and “None of Your Love” are the Los Angeles artist’s sun-drenched, off-kilter pop grooves that move with a touch of vintage psychedelia. And they are dangerously addictive.

Can you introduce yourself? Who are you, where do you come from, and when did you start making music?

My name is BB. I am from New Zealand, and I am currently living in Los Angeles. I started making music when I was 10.

What music did you grow up listening to? What music are you listening to now?

I grew up listening to Mum&Dad music. There was also plenty of angsty Sister music. Eventually I made a friend at high school who had cool parents, and we got really into techno. Recently, I’ve been listening to a classical station in my car, it makes pulling into a carpark feel very triumphant.

Which artists are you most inspired by when making your own music?

I enjoy people that express childish nature. Monks are great for that. Thich Nhat Hahn, the Dalai Lama etc. I also love rap.

What else inspires you?

I find cooking really musical. I also find that space is helpful for letting ideas arrive, so I spend a lot of time in quiet.

Do you make music mostly for yourself, or do you want to connect with others with it?

It’s definitely a balance. If it was only for me I’d probably record gongs all day. If it was simply for others I’d probably make techno. I like the push&pull of musical service.

What’s the significance of your name, BOYBOY?

It’s a term that is used in our friendship group when greeting another boy.

The cover art for your first two songs is really unique. What’s the story behind the art?

I was texting in front of my girlfriend and out of protest she drew my face. I really liked it so it became the artwork. From there we have gone on to highlight other body parts. For the second single we used my snaggle tooth.

Is this a solo project, or do you work with others on it?

The initial ideas may arise in my mind, but I like to share them with others. I also have very talented friends so it’s enjoyable gathering the extra dimension.

What are the next steps for you? Are you working towards an album?

I enjoy releasing individual tracks, although they will be wrapped into an EP this May.
