Between the Lines with Rap Genius: The 1975's “Sex”

Outside of rap and R&B, the music world seldom sees songs solely dedicated to depictions of sex in picturesque detail. Lucky for pop fans, English rockers The 1975 have taken the liberty of switching up the PC norms of the genre with their single entitled (you guessed it) “Sex”. Lyrical themes include: young love, erotic piercings, infidelity, and high top sneakers. But just for clarity, let Rap Genius take you between our top five lines.

"This is how it starts / You take your shoes off in the back of my van"

Of course, isn't this how it always starts? Sure to call forth memories of those days in your dad's old Chevy at 'the cliff', vocalist Matthew Healy sets a precursor to the heat and heaviness with an innocent removal of shoes. Don't get too riled up yet, you foot fetishists.

“There's only minutes before I drop you off and all we seem to do is talk about ‘sex’ / She's got a boyfriend anyway"

Straddling the fence that divides backyards of friends and lovers, Healy has to decide whether or not he will act on his dirty talk. There's a number of obstacles to sidestep before he makes his move, the biggest of which being the girl's beau.

"I loved your friend when I saw his film - he's got a funny face, but I like that cos he still looks cool"

SHOTS FIRED! Of course the baby faced Healy would take a shot at the presumably goofy looking filmmaker boyfriend. This sort of subtle condescension is step one in the How To Score Even Though There's A Goalie handbook, planting the seed of doubt in the girlfriend's mind so that he could plant his other seed later on.

“You've got your tongue pierced anyway / You in your high tops, any day / You in your skinny jeans anyway"

We'll leave it to comedian Chris Rock to explain this one:

“If a girl has her tongue pierced, she’ll probably suck your peter. If a guy has his tongue pierced, he’ll probably suck your peter.”

How romantic! Through unquestionably articulate persuasion, Healy has done it; the transition from fellatio to intercourse has seen the light of day, and he has now successfully dismantled a relationship while simultaneously relieving himself of primal urges.
