Gold Digger” is a lot of things: a defining rap track of 2005, part of Jamie Foxx’s Ray Charles phase, Kanye’s mainstream pop breakthrough—but melancholy ballad it is not. That’s why Aussie duo Twin Caverns’ take works so well. Haunting and echo-y, the arrangement showcases singer Louise Millar’s mournful, bluesy spin on the song’s raunchy lyrics. A twangy guitar and some mellow synths take the place of Ray Charles’ refrain, completing the song’s transformation from dancefloor anthem to moody serenade.

Listen below, and look out for the duo’s debut EP Glass Balloon, which comes out later this year.
