Silverchair—the Australian alt-rock band that, over 20 years together, defied their early casting as an Aussie Pearl Jam and found international acclaim—stopped performing together in 2011. Though one reason for the split was so the members could pursue solo projects, Daniel Johns, the group’s frontman and songwriter, hadn’t released any new music since the band’s 2007 album Young Modern.

This week, however, he dropped “Aerial Love,” the first track off his upcoming EP of the same name and his first new release in 8 years. The track, a gentle electro-R&B tune that showcases Johns’ singing voice, is a pretty serious stylistic shift…much closer to How to Dress Well than Hole. Produced by Joel Little (who’s worked with Lorde), “Aerial Love” shows how the “alt-R&B” sound is becoming one of pop’s defaults—we can’t wait to see who’s going to be trying out their falsetto next.
