It’s always a very, very touchy subject when covering songs from legends in music, especially those who have been elevated to god status like Michael Jackson. The king of pop isn’t untouchable but he’s quite close.
Fresh off the release of Yesterday’s Tomorrow, released in January, Brooklyn band Phony Ppl has taken it upon themselves to cover one of MJ’s later hits, “You Rock My World.” The track is taken from the 2001 album Invincible and as you can hear, the entire mainstream element has been stripped and given a more neo-soul feel with live instrumentation.
How do you think this cover fares in comparison to the original?
