Neutral Milk Hotel has come a long way. Proof? This original master release form for the band’s classic album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, as recently released by Merge Records. Shared on Facebook with the caption, “The original master release info for Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, circa July 1997. It has sold more than we initially expected,” the document outlines the projected sales of the originally self-titled 1998 album: a meager 5,500 units on CDs and 1,600 copies on vinyl.

To say that it “sold more than we initially expected” is, well, quite largely a tongue-in-cheek understatement as it went on to become one of the most popular indie albums of the past decade. Note that Jeff Mangum’s phone number is, funnily enough, marked as “disconnected at the moment.” Take a look at the document, as well as the dates for their reunion tour, below.
