Q-Tip Named As the First Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Hip-Hop Culture

To honor hip-hop’s influence and contributions to culture and society, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts unveiled a new Hip-Hop Culture series today. Included in the series are a number of programs presented in partnership with Hi-ARTS (Hip-Hop Arts and Urban Culture), and Q-Tip has been appointed as the first ever Artistic Director for Hip Hop Culture.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Q-Tip, speaking on the announcement. “Specifically nationally—dealing with issues of racism, issues of misogyny, [and] issues of classes. Hip-hop has not only served as one of the most influential art forms […] but it’s also the prevailing energy of culture around the world.

The series, which will begin in July and run through June of next year, has already announced some of the events, all of which you can see here.
