One of the most unsettling scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is when Hal 9000 robotically sings 1892’s “Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built For Two).” It made the song famous, but it also forever associated the song with a cold and creepy quality.
Mark Ryden, who you may know as the artist behind Tyler, the Creator’s Wolf album art, has put together a compilation—an ode of sorts—for “Daisy Bell.” Featuring Tyler, Katy Perry, Nick Cave, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, and more, Ryden’s collected an eccentric mix of artists to cover the 1892 song, all of which sound remarkably different, and all pair with Ryden’s art.
The Gay Nineties Old Tyme Music: Daisy Bell will be released in conjunction with Mark Ryden’s L.A. exhibit, “The Gay Nineties,” which will be held at the Kohn Gallery. Preview the covers and their accompanying artwork below. I’d avoid if you scare easily—most of the art and Tyler’s cover in particular are incredibly eerie.
