After departing Rawkus Records in 1999, rap icon El-P and business partner Amaechi Uzoigwe took a shot in the dark at creating their own hip-hop label—calling it Definitive Jux (Def Jux, for short). Assembling some of rap’s most prolific independent emcees, producers, and DJs, the collective known as the Def Jukies ruled underground hip-hop for ten years, and produced some of the greatest albums of the 2000s. While El-P put the label on an indefinite hiatus in February 2010 to pursue his solo career, its roster remains beloved by hip-hop heads worldwide. And for that reason we dedicate this gallery to Def Jux nostalgia. Flip through for some awesome photographs from the label’s heyday.
