James Murphy's Dream of a Musical Subway is Coming to Life

James Murphy still wants to turn New York's subway turnstiles into a choir.

None

James Murphy’s musical subway seemed little more than a pipe dream when he floated the idea out on a podcast a few months ago. But the former LCD Soundsystem frontman hasn’t backed away from the hope that we can “have something quite beautiful in a place where something beautiful seems impossible.”

The concept is simple: instead of the monotoned beep that comes with your current swipe, Murphy wants each station to be in a certain key, creating beautiful twinkling ambience as you descend into the depths. With news that New York’s subway authority is switching away from card swipes to a (still undetermined) new system, Murphy might not be chasing dragons on this one.
