Sometimes you hear a song and it feels especially crafted for your ears only. Agnes Obel‘s “The Curse” has this intimate, decadent quality. The Danish musician earned countless awards for her debut album Philharmonics and has finally began to pick up momentum in the US as well. Her sophomore release Aventine is slated for a October 1 release date in America. Agnes wrote, arranged and produced the entire album working in a Berlin recording studio called Chalk Wood Studios.

The visuals are full of stark images—birds soaring overhead, the white lines passing by on a road at night, shadows through an open door—and Agnes herself juxtaposed against starkly remote landscapes. Evoking names like Joanna Newsom, Cat Power and even the mysticism of Loreena McKennitt, Obel is operating in a whole different dimension. Pre-order the album at her website.
