The time of Topaz Jones is fast approaching. The Montclair rapper has been building buzz ever since his debut album The Honeymoon Suite, and the follow-up is just weeks away. But first, “Tropicana.” The single was produced by Jones and Episode, and the two have cooked up something wildly different than Jones’ previous offering, “Wasteland.”
“Tropicana” has a little West Coast G-funk, a little Stankonia swagger, and a lot of lyrical agility. It’s easy to lose yourself in Jones’ raps as they unspool themselves in fast-motion, but the production deserves a mention too. From an elusive cowbell to the shimmering chords that pop in during the chorus, everything is in its right place. Topaz Jones has a lot more in store for 2016, and “Tropicana” is just the beginning.
