Lil Wayne on Current Rappers: "They're not trying to be the best rapper, or the best at anything"

Lil’ Wayne and 2 Chainz stopped by DJ Drama’s Shade 45 radio show recently to talk about their collaborate ColleGrove album, and during the conversation, Lil’ Wayne took a shot at contemporary rappers at about 8 minutes into the video above, saying that they’re not as ambitious as they should be:

They settle for what works, and it’s working. It works for them, and that’s why you don’t hear me knocking them. You don’t hear me hating, saying ‘this is that’ or ‘this shouldn’t be’ or ‘you shouldn’t do this’ or ‘you shouldn’t do that,’ because it actually works for them. If it works, it works.

I’m part of a different culture, a different wave of music, and that wave was, you know, Jay Z, Nas, Biggie. At that time, it was all about being the best. I mean, I’m quoted for saying I’m the best rapper alive. Nowadays, nobody… they ain’t trying to be the best rapper, or the best at anything. They’re just trying to be them and do what the other people say is OK. I’m not a part of that culture and I’m damn sure happy I’m not.

Elsewhere in the conversation, DJ Drama hinted that the two, who previously collaborated on the Dedication mixtapes, have another release in the series coming. Lil Wayne added, “I’ve also been working on some crazy shit for a mixtape, we just didn’t have a good name for it yet, but it might as well just be a Dedication [mixtape].”

Listen to the 40-minute conversation above, which also includes the two talking about sports and working together.
