Ripsy May is of Armenian ancestry, was born in Latvia, then raised in London, and now lives in Los Angeles. With a background as diverse as hers, perceptions of race are fertile creative ground for the up-and-coming singer. Such is the topic of her debut release, the music video for “Black Wine,” which is premiering exclusively below.
“I had written a poem before the song about black and white, [or a] race divide of any kind, and how it affects us and how we see each other,” May said of the song’s origins. “The song was based off of that, and ‘Black Wine’ is essentially my word for propaganda. Sometimes people are a little too drunk on it. […] When I started writing ‘Black Wine,’ it was just two chords on the guitar that I then built up with vocals and harmonies. I’m obsessed with vocal arrangements, and this song is pretty much made of them.”
The clip is actually pretty similar to Ibeyi’s “Stranger / Lover,” as both feature faces being manipulated by disembodied hands, but this time, there’s paint involved.
