Throughout his illustrious career, David Bowie was a man of high standards, standards that apparently were not met by Coldplay.

In a new interview with Coldplay’s Will Champion and Jonny Buckland, Champion revealed that Bowie turned down an opportunity to collaborate with the band. Frontman Chris Martin wrote a letter to Bowie saying the band had written a song and they had Bowie in mind to contribute some vocals, but in his response, Bowie said, “It’s not a very good song, is it?”

Coldplay doesn’t seem to have taken the rejection too hard, instead chalking it up to Bowie’s pursuit of perfection. “He was very discerning,” Champion said to NME. “He wouldn’t just put his name to anything. I’ll give him credit for that.”
