Watch El-P and Killer Mike Explain How Meow The Jewels Went From a Joke to Reality

Now that Meow The Jewels is free and available to the public, El-P and Killer Mike are taking the time to reflect (and shake their heads in bewilderment) at the album that started off as highdea.

“It was just a joke,” El-P says in the above interview with Mass Appeal. “I was smoking weed at the kitchen table… I was bored, and though it would be funny if we came up with a bunch of fake ones. $40,000 seemed achievable, apparently, for a remix album made out of cat sounds.”

The two rappers sent all the proceeds to the families of Eric Garner and Mike Brown, two recent victims of police brutality. “We wouldn’t waste our time otherwise,” El-P said. The fundraising came from all over, according to Killer Mike: “It dispels the mythology that there are two teams in America, and we have to choose one. You can care about people you’ve never met before.”
