I have such a love/hate relationship with non hip-hop artists covering hip-hop songs. There are some who do an incredible job with it (like Lykke Li), but then there are some that make me want to jump in front of a garbage truck (see here, here, and here).
Luckily, VÉRITÉ‘s cover of Childish Gambino “Sober” gracefully dodges the latter and ends up as one of the better genre-bending renditions. While Gambino’s original was more uptempo, this one plays to her strengths and focuses on electronic embellishments and VÉRITÉ’s power as a vocalist.
