Statik Selektah is one of rap’s most dependable producers: he’s dropped six studio albums since 2007, each more solid than the last. His next, Lucky 7, is due to drop July 7, but it sounds like Statik is flipping the script for this one. “I just grew tired of doing the same thing over and over,” he told Complex. “There is definitely something for everyone on this album.”
There’s definitely something for Action Bronson—that would be “Beautiful Life,” the album’s first single. Bronson and fellow New Yorker Joey Bada$$ go to work on this one, trading bars over a crunchy bass line and classic rock vibes. The smooth Chaka Khan sample could have easily landed on Bronson’s sepia-toned Mr. Wonderful, and Action takes apart the beat like it’s a rack of sauce-smothered baby-back ribs.
