As fans, you can often tell through the music when a band comes together in a forced way, compared to a more organic scenario. The latter is how Blur made The Magic Whip, thanks to a trip to Hong Kong.

Through a new documentary titled The Magic Whip: Made In Hong Kong, the band tells the story of how unexpectedly their new effort came about. From how they tell it, a cancelled festival led to to some free time in China and them messing around with ideas in the studio. Next thing you know, they have an album’s worth of material, which ultimately ended up being The Magic Whip.

Peep the half hour documentary above and check out their travels through Asia and how excited they seemed to work with one another again.
