When we first heard London O’Connor’s “Oatmeal,” we knew this kid was different. He raps with an apathetic, effortless flow, but his music features elements far removed from modern hip-hop. We heard even more of that with his second track, “Love Song.”
To find out more about the artist behind the music, we met with London O’Connor at his friend’s spot in New York City. His friend happened to be Nick Sansano, producer of Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation and Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. What you see in the video above is what happened when London sat at the piano and started playing and singing, all freestyling, completely unrehearsed.
London’s got an interesting outlook—there’s an almost childlike open-mindedness about him, and musically he seems to have as much in common with Daniel Johnston as he does with Earl Sweatshirt. It’s impossible to predict what’s next for London, but for now he seems to be enjoying the process of creating, and that’s one of the most refreshing things you can get from a young artist in today’s fast-paced, business-driven world of music.
