Video Premiere: Gosh Pith - "Waves"

By Lauren Schwartzberg

Detroit-based Gosh Pith have mostly stayed under-the-radar since dropping their attractively woozy first single “Waves,” about two months ago. With its deep, slowed-down bass and reverberating vocals, it made me anxious for a time when minimal psychedelic future-pop is the present. It was a surprisingly full and well-developed track for a debut single, and now they’re back with a video to match.

“The video is a brief exploration through the realm of the subconscious, with Kelly (the girl with the pink hair) as our subject/dreamweaver,” said Josh Smith, one half of Gosh Pith (the other half is also named Josh). “I wrote this story because so many things I was seeing in my dreams were coming true in real life. I wanted to imagine what it would be like to have a dream where someone breaks out of a cosmic trap, kind of liberating and empowering themselves and overcoming tons of the funny obstacles we are faced with every day.” The dream features Elvis, a lonely cowboy, some slick businessmen and the ghost of an old Death Row Records intern.

It’s an eclectic mix, just like Gosh Pith’s sound which they’ve taken to calling “cosmic trap.” For their first show ever, Gosh Pith opened for Wiz Khalifa, and they’ll be stopping through NYC for a performance at Baby’s All Right on October 26. It’ll be the only place to hear new Gosh Pith music, which is set to come out for the rest of us in the form of an EP sometime in late fall or early winter.
