Only a month has passed since Chicago emcee Mick Jenkins delivered his excellent The Water[s] mixtape, but he’s already back at it with new music in the form of the Kaytranada-produced “Rain.”

Mick’s gravelly tone works nicely with the smooth, ambient production—which hinges on a sample from Missy Elliott’s classic “The Rain”—and he continues on with the same type of social commentary present throughout The Water[s] (and his entire career to date, really). The fast-rising rapper is developing a powerful, consistent voice, and “Rain” is yet another example of his versatility and growth as an artist.
