A lot of the time, instrumental tracks need to have a lot going on to stay interesting. If you’ve only got a few elements at play, those elements better be strong. In the case of Christian Rich’s “Seven,” minimalism proves effective. In fact, some of the most gripping pieces of this production are the gaps—the moments of complete silence that make the beat that much more satisfying when it drops back in. These are the kinds of thumps and snaps that would make Dilla proud.
