If you’re familiar with Mayer Hawthorne for his retro soul sounds, get ready for a change. He’s teamed up with friend and collaborator 14KT for a new project called Jaded Inc. and the duo releases their debut album, The Big Knock, on June 17. Hear the first single, “Coconut Sofa,” here.
Influenced by the electronic music of Detroit in the ’90s, they’ve come up with a new sound they call “beat wave,” and it’s different than anything Hawthorne has done in the past. To get a better idea of their new sound, check out the remix they did of Phantogram’s “Fall In Love.”
“Normally we don’t like to remix a song that already has great production,” Jaded Inc. explains. “But we felt we could take this one to a completely different place. We sped it up about 40 bpm and took it to Detroit/Chicago jit land.”
