Lykke Li‘s new music has been sounding dark and full of pain, and the first couple lines of “Gunshot” quickly reveal that this is going to be no exception: “I am longing for your poison/Like a cancer for its prey.” Despite the bleak lyrics, “Gunshot” is, at least sonically, very full of life. The chorus breaks out like an ’80s anthem, and by the end of the song, Lykke somehow has us singing gleefully along. “And the shot goes through my head and back.” La la la la la…. Lykke Li’s album I Never Learn comes out on May 5.
