While some artists feel strongly about their past drug use, condemning their own mistakes and urging others to never try it, Damon Albarn has a somewhat different response to his own. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the Blur and Gorillaz frontman addressed it head on, stating that he wouldn’t dismiss his experimenting with heroin as a mistake, going on to suggest that it was “really profound for [him] and had a massive effect on [his] life 15 years ago.”

“But I don’t totally see it as a mistake,” he explains. “That’s the point. It was part of me growing up. Look, I didn’t go out and look for it.” Albarn describes his first encounter with the drug, sitting on the table at his and his former girlfriend, Justine Frischmann’s home: “What should I have done? Leave my life and reject it or stay in my own house with my girlfriend and somehow assimilate it into my life?” Once he tried heroin, he found it “initially very agreeable, and very creative.”

Damon Albarn’s first solo album, Everyday Robots, is due April 28. Today, he released the video for “Heavy Seas Of Love.” Watch below.
