With a press picture like that, does the song even need to be good? It’s a valid question, but one that will remain a hypothetical as Brolin‘s “Portland” is, without a doubt, very good. The masked Englishman makes arresting electronic pop, first making waves with his now-signature single, “Reykjavik,” an icily infectious exercise in tension and catharsis. “Portland” is another beast entirely. Loose, clattering and bright, it’s hard to stop listening to this once you start—producer Peaking Lights lays out a warm, looped groove over which Brolin delivers obliquely troubling lyrics and one devilishly catchy chorus—this is intriguing pop that doesn’t leave your head after the song finishes.
