The Coolest Covers of 2013 So Far

A list of the best covers of 2013 so far.

1. J Mascis - "Fade Into You"

Original: Mazzy Star

Melancholy nymphette Mazzy Star shifted eons of lovelorn souls and oceans of pillow-scented tears with her love-swept tune "Fade Into You." The 1994 track became an instant classic and Star reached mythical proportions on a storm cloud of success. Star’s sex appeal was enough to capture a boy’s attention, but "Fade Into You," in all its sublime wonderment, was made for the virginal blossom of all teenage crushes. Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis makes it into something totally different while staying musically true to the song's structure. His voice bemoans something fifteen years later, when the love has sputtered out and come to a smothering halt. When he sings "strange you never knew," it comes with a sullen sigh of understanding, a feeling like that other person just doesn’t get it the way they used to.
