You may not guess it by listening to Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ new album, but frontwoman Karen O says Kanye West was a big influence on Mosquito, citing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as one of the key sources of inspiration. Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ guitarist Nick Zinner, who calls the album a masterpiece, turned her on to the record. Karen O told SPIN:
“It’s so soulful, and I love soul. The vibe lifted me out of the mundane and took me somewhere else, man. And it stuck out like a sore thumb. It’s a work of art. It’s a record. It was a moment of clarity. His signal was crystal clear and we all got it. One of the last records that made me feel that way was Under Construction by Missy Elliott.”
